Across Eastern Europe, thousands of gifted young people long for the chance to study, but poverty and hardship often close the door on their dreams. In Ukraine, the war has left many families unable to provide for even basic schooling. In Romania, where school dropout rates are among the highest in Europe, children in rural areas face long commutes and costs their families cannot bear. In Moldova, young people are forced to choose between heating their homes or continuing their studies. In Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, and Albania, education has become a privilege for the wealthy, leaving bright and determined students with little hope of a future beyond low-paid, insecure work.
Scholarships provide not only tuition fees, but also the essentials that make education possible: transportation, accommodation, meals, supplies, and even guidance and mentoring. The impact lasts far beyond the classroom. Former students are now pastors, leaders, professionals, volunteers, and even MWB staff, giving back to their communities and inspiring the next generation.
